Our 2020 U10 squad is a very talented young bunch of cricketers. While we wonder if they will get the opportunity to have a crack at winning the prestigious U10 Gubby Allen Final played at Lords, we glance back to this extract from the Middlesex Colts Association - Official Cricket Handbook about our last winners in 2012.
A sun drenched Nursery ground at Lords was the venue for the final of the Gubby Allen and the Sunbury U10's set about staying unbeaten in all competitions this season and adding another trophy to the cabinet against Finchley.
Winning the toss, Sunbury batted first against some very tight bowling and fielding from Finchley they had to earn every run. Rohan Luthra and Neral Gunawardena got off to a good start getting to 15 off 4 overs.
Rhianna Southby and Jonathan Miles added a net score of 17 off their 4 overs with Rhianna smashing a huge 6 on her way to 19 not out.
Syed Ammar and George Price carried on the steady work to add 13 runs meaning Sunbury were on 45 after 12 overs.
So with the foundation laid, Aaryan Pillai and Louis Goodwin had the job of trying to make the par score a winning score. Some classic strikes later from Aaryan including a text book cover drive for 4 in his 24 not out and a cameo of wristy shots from Louis against their spinner and Sunbury reached a good 74 (6 short of the coaches target)
With the ball George Price got Sunbury off to a great start showing nerves of steel by bowling a maiden over and his other only went for 2. Louis Goodwin carried on the good work and grabbed a wicket caught by Neral Gunawardena, leaving him with figures of 1 for 6 and Finchley's first partnership on only 3. Aaryan Pillai and Syed Ammar kept the pressure up with a couple of wickets, one caught by Rohan Luthra behind the stumps meaning Finchley were on 19 off 8 overs.
During Finchley's 3rd partnership Syed took his 2nd wicket, on his way to 3 overs, 2 wickets for 19 runs, with another catch from keeper Luthra. Sunbury then had solid bowling efforts from Southby, Miles and Gunawardena but this spell saw a mix of Finchley's batsmen starting to hit out and a case of understandable nerves from Sunbury's bowlers meant Finchley needed 15 off the last over.
Aaryan Pillai was given the task of bowling the final over and great credit to Finchley they gave it a go but some quick thinking between Luthra and Pillai produced a run out and the trophy was on its way to the hands of Captain Miles to take back to Sunbury for the 5th time.
Well done to Sunbury Gubby Allen Squad - Syed Ammar, Henry De Lord, Louis Goodwin, Neral Gunawardena, Akash Kapila, Rohan Luthra, Jonathan Miles, Aaryan Pillai, George Price, Rhianna Southby. Scorer: Terry Stickley, Managers : David Wright & Martin Miles.
