2nd XI Player who took over 1,300 wickets

Members who knew Roger will be saddened to learn that he passed away on 8th April.

A left arm off spin bowler, he was the scourge of his opponents taking 1,342 wickets for the Club, more than 1,000 of which were for the 2nd XI, for whom he was leading wicket taker in the season 8 times. In 1982 he became only the second player to take more than 100 wickets in a season for the 2ndX1 when he took 106 wickets. His best performance was when he took 8 wickets at a cost of 63 runs against v Old Whitgiftians in 1978.

He also scored just short of 3,500 runs as a useful lower order batsman and was an excellent gully fielder taking many an acrobatic catch sending a deeply disgruntled and humiliated batsmen back to the pavilion.

We shall remember him mostly however as a friend off the field. We missed him greatly when, following retirement, he moved from our midst to return to his beloved Cornwall.

His self-deprecating humour was infectious. His friendships were unconditional, and he believed in and placed trust in others. He also enjoyed a beer – or two.

Those who knew him have lost a very good friend.
