Harri Kurubaran had an outstanding game, as the U8s won their fixture against Weybridge by 72 runs. Scoring 15 runs and taking 1 wicket in 2 overs without giving away a single run, it was a great all-round performance.
It was a similarly confident win for the U9s, who got the better of Moormead by a margin of 79 runs. Prabhgun Mandair bowled brilliantly for his 2-7 off 3 overs, while Varin Sanapati excelled with the bat as he hit 20 off 17 balls.
Captain Shaurya Panigrahy led from the front in an excellent performance that saw the U11s beat Old Woking by 29 runs. Batting first, Shaurya retired not out on 30 from 22 balls, with Adhrit Chadha and Raff Tindall both making 21, as Sunbury posted 168. With the ball, the skipper claimed 3-13 off 3 overs and took a catch to round off a good win.
The U11Bs were also in action, as they travelled to Ashtead. Rajveer Behniwal top scored with a quick 29 from 17 balls, while Ahrin Kotecha bowled superbly for his 2-1 off 2 overs to complete an 81-run victory.
To round out a clean sweep for the U11 age group, the U11 Girls had a commanding 84-run win over Old Rutlishians.
Unfortunately, the U12 Girls fell to defeat at Streatham & Marlborough by 73 runs. Despite this, Bea Earl did fantastically well with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 8 runs from her 2 overs and Hrisha Shah played nicely for her 15 runs.
Concluding a successful Sunbury Sunday were the U13s, who saw off Old Rutlishians. Batting first, Sunbury made 165 from their 25 overs – Ridhaan Gala (50 off 36) and Lucas Cholewa (52 off 43) both retiring not out after making half centuries. The wickets were shared between seven bowlers, with Rabee Rehman the pick with his 2-14 off 3 overs.
Monday 2nd June
Lenny Connors held his nerve brilliantly to bring up a maiden half-century and guide the U12s to a tense victory over Richmond. Having lost the toss, Sunbury were put in the field and a good effort from the bowlers kept Richmond to 148 – Lenny taking 2-25 from his 4 overs. After some great catching by Richmond’s fielders, Sunbury found themselves under pressure at 41-3 after 7 overs. However, having done well with the ball, Lenny demonstrated his capabilities with bat in hand, striking a chanceless and skilful 60 not out off 51 balls. Needing 38 from the final 4 overs, Oscar Barnes smashed 13 off just 5 balls as he and Lenny chased down the required runs with 2 balls to spare to complete an outstanding 6-wicket win.
At Hampstead, the U15s progressed into the semi-final of the County Cup. Rishaan Mehmi top scored with 42 off 32 balls and Alfie Granger cracked 30 off 19 as Sunbury posted 144. The bowlers kept it tight throughout, with Alfie Granger taking 3 wickets for 18 runs from his 4 overs – one of which was courtesy of a spectacular diving catch by Albert Connors, as the opposition were restricted to 124-7.
Tuesday 3rd June
The U14s put in a spirited performance in their defeat to league leaders Wycombe House. Having been put into bat, Sunbury quickly dispelled any hope the opposition may have had of dismissing us cheaply. Opener Marlee Sharp set the tone by hitting 40 off 29 balls before Adhayan Singh entered the fray. The left hander brutally pulverised the Wycombe House bowlers – plundering 63 off just 29 balls, including 6 fours and 6 maximums. It got Sunbury to the excellent total of 191 off the allotted 20 overs. While we showed a huge amount of character and determination in the field and with the ball – exemplified by the outstanding run out effected by Vayun Jain – the experience gap between the two sides showed, as Wycombe House chased down their target in the 19th over.
Sadly, the U15Bs also came off second best in their game against Indian Gymkhana. No Sunbury batter got set; Extras was by far the highest contributor with a solid 56, and the next best was Haris Ramzan’s 16, as we got to 113. Leo Pearson bowled well for his 2-19 off 3, but Indian Gym won the game with more than 3 overs remaining.
Wednesday 4th June
A close-fought game between the U10 Girls and Esher, saw Sunbury fall just short. Tabitha Klein was the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets for 6 runs off 2 overs and Hrisha Shah top scored with 15 runs, as we made 63-9 in response to Esher’s 66-6.
Alas, it was a similarly tight defeat for the U11s, as they lost by 2 runs to Indian Gymkhana. Sunbury’s spinners did the damage with the ball; Ranveer Singh took 3 wickets for 22 runs from his 3 overs, while Dhamanveer Singh was highly economical – taking 1-5 off 3. Cameos from Dhamanveer (18), Ranveer (14) and Jack Vaney (19) were not quite enough to get Sunbury over the line in the run chase.
It was a better night for the U14Bs who beat Woking & Horsell by 35 runs. Batting first, Ridhaan Gala led the way at the top of the order as he retired not out on 40, with Nick Byrne’s 22 off 18 and Arnav Mishra’s 25* off 18 pushing Sunbury to a total of 147. With the ball, five different bowlers took wickets – Lewis Williams and Tobi Smith taking 2 each – and there were also three run outs effected, as the opposition were bowled out for 112.
At St George’s, the U14 Girls made light work of their match against Weybridge; the hosts were dismissed for 65, with Kaia Cheung taking 3-16 and Grace Mansfield’s 3 overs going for a paltry 3 runs. In addition to her bowling efforts, which were most miserly, Mansfield motored majestically to a retirement of 30 off 21 balls, before Lilian finished the job in the 12th over by hitting 14 off just 4 deliveries.
The U15s cruised past Egham: Josh Cholewa top scored for Sunbury, retiring not out on 53 off 47 balls, with good contributions from Dan Ahmed (34) and Samarth Sheth (33), as 170-2 was posted. Captain Albert Connors, hoping to get some good time in the middle, managed to face 4 balls at the end of the innings, scoring 8 runs. Thomas Wilson was the pick of the bowlers for his 1-10 from 3 overs, with Sunbury completing a 32-run victory.
Thursday 5th June
In a game reduced to 15 overs a side due to inclement weather, the U13s were beaten by Wycombe House by 33 runs. The visitors posted 131: Ridhaan Gala was the most economical bowler in conceding 11 runs from 3 overs, while Leo McLeod bowled well for his 1-20. In reply, opener Ridhaan hit a composed 25 but the Sunbury innings never got into gear, aside from a destructive 41 off 30 balls from skipper Haris Ramzan, which included 4 sixes.
Friday 6th June
Avenging their defeat in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, the U15s comfortably overcame Richmond. As ever, captain Charlie Maunders batted with composure up top, hitting a 38-ball 39, and Rishaan Mehmi was at his attacking best as he crunched 63 from 33 balls to help Sunbury to 157. Alfie Bloomfield bowled sharply – his 4 overs bringing him 2 wickets for the concession of 12 runs – while left-arm spinner Ibby Hussain picked up 3 wickets to limit Richmond to 109-7.
