Continuing their impressive run of form, the U15s dominated the Regional Semi Final against Wolvercote.
Having lost the toss, Sunbury were made to field first and as so often is the case, it was the spinners that did much of the damage up front. Albert Connors (2-22 off 4) struck twice, while Charlie Maunders (1-11 off 4) got rid of Wolvercote’s set opener. The other spinner in Sunbury’s ranks, Ibby Hussain, bowled a highly economical spell, conceding just 10 runs from his 4 overs, and seamer Alfie Granger (2-17 off 4) removed the opposition’s captain and wicket keeper in successive deliveries.
Sharp fielding brought about three runouts towards the end of the innings, with Dan Ahmed responsible for two, and the other at the hands of Alfie Granger. Tidy bowling at the death by Josh Cholewa (1-6 off 2) ensured Wolvercote could only muster 91-9 from their 20 overs.
Openers Charlie Maunders and Harry Kerridge ensured the chase would not be a nervy one, as they put on 64 for the first wicket. When Harry fell for an excellent 29 and Rishaan Mehmi departed for a duck, it was Dan Ahmed who joined the skipper. The pair got Sunbury over the line in the 17th over, securing an 8-wicket win: Charlie batted with a great deal of composure and skill, finishing on a superb unbeaten 41, while Dan was not out on 12, to send Sunbury to the final later that day.
It may have been the Regional Final, but the U15s showed no signs of nerves as they romped to a 59-run win over Brighton & Hove. On this occasion, Sunbury won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that had been low scoring all day. Once again it was the opening combination of Maunders and Kerridge that laid a great platform, taking the score to 50 without loss. Harry fell for a well-made 18, but Charlie was still going well as he and Rishaan Mehmi guided the score to 72 before the latter was dismissed. Alfie Granger was the next man in, and, in typical Granger fashion, he added impetus to the Sunbury innings, crashing a few quick boundaries.
However, Sunbury did suffer a wobble after their talismanic captain was out for an excellent 40, before Dan Ahmed was trapped lbw without troubling the scorers and Ayush Obhrai was bowled for 2. The next over then saw Josh Cholewa (1), Granger (17) and Alfie Bloomfield (0) all make way as the scoreboard made for less pretty reading at 100-8 off 16 overs. But an outstanding partnership of 26 between Ibby Hussain (11*) and Albert Connors (10) helped drag Sunbury to the total of 129.
Brighton & Hove got off to a solid start in their chase, but they were never able to get ahead of the game, and their momentum was stalled by Alfie Granger (1-9 off 3) cleaning up their opener in the 6th over followed by Ibby Hussain removing their other opener next over, courtesy of a phenomenal catch by Jack Marland. A few overs later, Ibby (2-21 off 3) got in on the act again, this time bowling Brighton’s number four for 7. It sparked a collapse of 8 wickets for 20 runs, as Josh Cholewa (2-7 off 2) took 2 wickets in an over and sharp work behind the stumps by Rishaan Mehmi off the bowling of Connors (1-17 off 3) saw Jarvis stumped for 4. Connors and Mehmi combined again to run out Chamberlain for 5, and Maunders (2-7 off 3) took 2 wickets in 2 balls to leave Brighton on the brink at 70-9. It took just a single ball for the game to be over, as Ayush Obhrai’s throw to Mehmi saw the opposition’s captain run out. As Rishaan whipped off the bails, it confirmed Sunbury as U15 Regional Champions and sets up a tie with Exeter in the National Cup Semi Final.
Unfortunately, the U17Bs were narrowly edged out by 8 runs at the hands of Ashford, despite a superb innings from Matt Gillespie. Spinners Vayun Jain (1-26 off 4) and Aadit Unni (1-12 off 3) were the pick of the bowlers, as Ashford posted 189. Skipper Unni then hit a well-made 42 off 24 balls and Tyrone Visvakula made a quickfire 33 from 17, but Matt Gillespie’s unbeaten 62 from just 34 balls was the standout innings that almost got Sunbury over the line.

Sadly, it was also defeat for the U14s who lost by 8 wickets at Hampstead. With Sunbury 5-2 and 40-4, it took an outstanding partnership between Jack Marland, who hit an excellent unbeaten 55, and Adhayan Singh (45) to post the total of 137-5. However, despite Marland taking 2 wickets in 2 balls, Hampstead chased down the required runs in the 18th over.
Sunday 3rd August
The U12s beat Shepperton by 39 runs, with captain Lenny Connors retiring not out on 32 off 20 balls with the bat and Ben Stevens taking 3 wickets for 9 runs off his 2 overs with the ball.
At a wet and windy Wembley, the U17s were crowned County Cup champions, beating Ealing by 5 wickets in a low scoring affair. True to form, Albert Connors produced a masterful bowling display, taking 3 wickets for 6 runs in 4 overs, while Rajveer Johal and Tom Goldney each picked up a brace to limit Ealing to 100. The latter also hit 22 runs with the bat, combining well with Tyrone Visvakula (25) for the third wicket, before Rishaan Mehmi smashed 26 off 13 balls to see Sunbury home with 1 over to spare.
