Weybridge dominate local derby

1st XI V Weybridge - 10 June 2017

With 3 of the regular top four batsmen missing and facing full strength local rivals Weybridge, it was always likely Sunbury might struggle. And so it proved as batting first they ended up 40/50 runs short of a respectable total and then saw Weybridge get home with 4 overs to spare

On a flat batting wicket and with an electric outfield Sunbury’s emergency openers
Mees Hussain (15) and Sacha Duran (27) get off to a steady start against Weybridge quicks
Henry Turner and Jack Winslade but found scoring difficult and although the pair added 41 for the first wicket, it took them into the 17th over before Sarel Erwee replacing Turner quickly captured the wickets of both openers. Sam Burgess and Rhythm Bedi then put on 56 before Bedi (21) in the last over before lunch and Burgess (45) shortly after the break both fell to the dangerous Turner. Confident starts from Alex Hughes (12), Ishy Sohi (12) and Kevin Smith (18) followed but they were unable to give Sunbury’s blossoming Surrey pro Amar Virdi (54*) the full support needed to mount a more formidable total as the innings closed on a below par 241-9

The Weybridge innings faltered as they were reduced to 58-3 before Erwee (64) and keeper Mathew Laidman (57) added 97 in 16 overs but the introduction of Vishal Manro into the attack saw the Sunbury left arm spinner capture 3 wickets and when Erwee was run out before Virdi took his third wicket when Conor Fulton stumped Winslade for 31 Weybridge were reduced to 209-8. With the match at that stage in the balance it was the Weybridge tail that wagged as Kay(47*) and Vainker(11*) saw visitors over the line.

Manro (3-73 and Virdi (3-107) were again Sunbury’s most successful bowlers but their brittle and inconsistent batting needs more backbone if they are to get away from the bottom of the table

This Saturday Sunbury visit struggling Guildford for what could turn out to be an important battle to move up the league table, the match starting at 11.00am and on Sunday they entertain Essex Premier side Hornchurch in the Conference Cup starting at 1.00pmscc-postfeatureimage
