Cricket on Sundays

We are short of players at the weekends, especially on Sundays, and we would be delighted to see more colts and coaches and fathers playing at the weekends.

The selection policy for Sunday cricket is more relaxed than that for Saturdays and the aim is to get players playing where they wish to (subject to being of relevant standard). We have 5 different teams, although not all play every Sunday, and there is something to suit everyone.

Sunday 1st XI

This side represents Sunbury in the National Cockspur Cup, the Evening Standard Challenge Trophy, the Three Counties League and the Three Counties Cup. It is selected on merit from those available.

Chieftains

This side plays in the Surrey Trust League and play in coloured clothing and with orange balls and black stumps. The team has to include 6 players under 21, of which 4 must be under 18. The remainder of the team can be of any age, and would normally be the best players available that day. The aim is to bring on the best colts so they have further experience of playing at the top level.

Academy

The Academy side exists to give those colts who do not get selected on Saturdays regular cricket with and against adults. They play in the Three Counties 2nd XI league. Selection is based on getting a balance of about 4 adults and 7 colts. It is the ideal way for a young colt to start playing adult cricket.

Squires

The Squires is a team of ‘experienced’ players who enjoy playing friendly cricket. They play on alternate Sundays against like-minded clubs on good pitches with good facilities at a reasonable level of performance, although individual skills are varied. While some choose not to do so, many members of the team meet for lunch in the pavilion for home games or in specially selected pubs near the ground when playing away. It is a very popular side for those ‘experienced’ cricketers who wish to continue, or resume, playing cricket without the pressure to turn out every Sunday – indeed, some only play a few games in the season.

Optimists

The Optimists play on alternate Sundays (when the Squires are not playing) and Bank Holiday Mondays, and the team is usually a mixture of adults (young and old) and colts. They play friendly cricket against smaller clubs on good grounds. This is an ideal side for those Squires who want to play most Sundays, or for those who do not want to play in, or do not get selected for, the league teams. There is no pressure to play regularly, although we hope most will.
