It was a very interesting start to the season for the 3XI as our first win came due to a forfeit giving us maximum points in the opening game. Not how you would imagine an opening win to come about but it started the season off well due to the struggles we endured last season.
Sunbury hosted a competitive Walton side and the opposition one the toss and decided to bat which is very common on a lovely flat deck on the bottom square. Opening bowlers James Birch and Mani Baines looked very dangerous as Walton failed to get off to strong start losing early wickets. Jay Plaha, Neral Gunawardena and Colin Bentall added to Walton’s troubles as the visitors seemed to be on the verge of collapse at 59-6. Walton battled on with No. 3 bat Gorvin hitting a very important and impressive 82 but did not seem to be enough as Walton posted a very under par score of 176. Birch finishing with 3-24, Baines 2-29 and Plaha 2-33. A very impressive bowling performance for a transformed Sunbury 3XI from the previous year.
Andy Martin and Linky Sharma got Sunbury off to an amazing start with Sunbury being in prime position at 56-0 of 4 overs. Walton bounced back with 3 quick wickets which changed the tide of the match completely bringing Greg Havard and Vik Rathore to the crease to steady the ship. Sunbury eventually lost Havard aswell but by this time Sunbury looked very comfortable with Rathore scoring a very impressive 54 with Baines and Bedi seeing us home. Rathore 54 and Martin 41.
Overall it was a very impressive performance by a strong 3XI Sunbury team looking comfortable throughout. As a team the 3XI looked like a transformed side looking very positive throughout and had a feel of togetherness that was not apparent the season prior. 2 from 2 is all you want at the start of a new season and hopefully we can push on to next week with another great win away at Sutton.
