SUN. 18TH FEBRUARY THE REBEL YELL JAZZ ORCHESTRA

The Clarke-Boland Big Band was the most accomplished and exciting jazz big band formed outside the US in the ’60s. Comprising the cream of European and expatriate American players like Ronnie Scott, Johnny Griffin, Tony Coe, Benny Bailey and the master of bebop drumming himself, Kenny Clarke, the group astonished audiences around Europe with Francy Boland’s exciting and daring arrangements. The Rebel Yell Jazz Orchestra was formed 3 years ago specifically to play the music of this exciting band and has had many of the pieces especially transcribed. The band recently featured the Fellini 712 suite, one of Francy Boland’s most audacious long-form pieces ever written for jazz orchestra, at the Spice of Life in Cambridge Circus in front of Tony Coe one of the original band members. The suite, which was recorded by the legendary Clarke-Boland Big Band in December 1968, is a musical tribute to the city of Rome in three movements, each of which contains variations on a recurring theme. The band plan to revisit at least part if not all of the suite on the 18th February, where the concert will feature a wide range of material from the Clarke-Boland repertoire and some other interesting big band pieces.
The Rebel Yell Jazz orchestra comprises musicians from across the London jazz scene, and includes top local bass player Roger Harding.
Fri. 16th March THE JOHN VERITY BAND £7.50
We are very pleased to welcome another new name to the club, with a top-class and highly-regarded blues band led for former Argent front man John Verity, who took over that role from Russ Ballard in 1973, and was later a member of CBS-signed band Phoenix with Jim Rodford of The Zombies and Argent, as well as producing albums by Charlie and Saxon during that time. In subsequent years he worked as a session and touring musician with many top names as well as producing other artists, and made a highly-acclaimed solo album “Interrupted Journey”. He subsequently toured and recorded with many major names but in recent years has returned to performing under his own name, drawing his band from a pool of excellent musicians – the specific line-up for this show will be announced nearer the date. He appeared last year at the Southern Guitar Show at Kempton Park, to demonstrate his JV Signature guitar, and the audience were clamouring to get him to play at a venue in the area, so we are happy to oblige. There’s full information and fascinating background on his web site at www.johnverity.com, with videos of ‘live’ performances.
