Colts Highlights 2011

The Colts have yet again distingusihed themselves during the season.

Key honours have included the success of the U15s as Middlesex Champions. As well as team successes we are also making a special success of our contributions in Surrey. Individual honours have included:

Rhianna Southby: Surrey age group award for U11 girls.

Rithwik Gonella: Surrey age group award for U10 boys.

Rajan Soni: Surrey age group award for U13 boys.

As if Sunbury Colts could not bbe showcased any more, our Colts also provided a guard of honour for the players at the Oval on the awards day.

Amar Virdie and Robbie Hughes: Following the excellence of his season U13 Amar has been invited to attend an assessment at Loughborough; and U14 Robbie, who led the county batting averages also scored 2 District centuries.

All this shows not just what fabulous opportunities our coaches have been able to provide for our colts, but the fun and pleasure so many colts have derived from being part of the Club.

Rhianna Southby: What the boys can do, Rhianna can do better! Apart from being awarded the U11 Surrey Girls player of the year she has also been invited to attend the Surrey County Emerging Players Academy. Rhianna is a genuine all-rounder who keeps wicket for half the game and then comes out to bowl. She has made the number 4 spot with the bat her own in the county team with 122 runs in 8 innings with a highest score of 42 and an average 24.4. She has bowled 19 overs for 75 runs averaging 10.7 with best bowling 2 for 4 off three overs.

1st XI Stalk Wimbldon's Narrowing Lead in Surrey Championship

Sunbury Overwhelm Guildford Dismissed for 76

Having established a lead in the Surrey Championship ealy in the season, the weather intervened to allow Wimbledon to move ahead. In a process of nip and tuck, aided by a win over Wimbledon on 25th June and over Guildford on 9th July, Sunbury have come to within 3 points of the leaders.

For more details see our own results round up page and more detailed scorecard information.

Further details of our, and other Clubs', performances in the Ryman Surrey Championship are available on the Championship's results pages and in their League tables.

Sunbury Duo's Heroics Can't Save Ireland against Scotland

Paul Stirling 113 (95 balls) Andrew Poynter 51 (34 balls)

Both Sunbury players were Ireland's only batsmen to score at more than a run a ball. They helped their country to a promising 320 in 50 overs, only for Scotland to win by 5 wickets. AP has another chance to shine as he has been appointed to captain Ireland 'A' in their forthcoming fixture against Yorkshire.

For more details see scorecard.

Congratulations to Stuey Poynter

Stuey's maiden selection for the full Ireland side to play Namibia was ill rewarded when the visitors failed to obtain the necessary visas to enter the country. Our commiserations to Stuey and better luck next time.

1st XI Maintain Lead in Ryman Surrey Championship

1st, 2nd & 3rd XIs win Premier Division League Matches

After further strong perfomances over the week end of 28th and 29th May, with more wins in the Ryman Surrey Championship and a convincing victory over Blackheath in the 2nd Round of the Conference Cup, Sunbury CC looked forward with confidence to the encounter of all four XIs against Ashtead on 4th June.

Almost everything went to plan with wins by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XIs. However, a clean sweep did not quite come our way. The 4th XI struggled valiantly away but just failed to hold out for a draw when the last man was dismised just two balls from the end of the match.

The 1st XI's crushing 9 wicket win, impressive though it was, only enabled them to maintain their single point lead at the top of the Championship after main rivals Wimbledon won their match against Reigate Priory by 4 wickets. The 3rd XI also maintained their one point lead, again over Wimbledon, with the 2nd XI maintaining their 2nd place in the league.

For more details see our own results round up page and more detailed scorecard information.

Further details of our, and other Clubs', performances in the Ryman Surrey Championship are available on the Championship's results pages and in their League tables.

Conference Cup Third Round v Lordswood CC (Away) Sunday 12th June

An intriguing encounter is on the cards with the fixture against Kent Premier League club Lordswood who are in 2nd place, just one point behind Premier League leaders Blackheath defeated by Sunbury in the last round. A win would place Sunbury just two matches away from the Conference Cup Final.

Sunbury Overpower Reigate Priory

3rd and 4th XIs Also Win
Paul Stirling strikes out during the match

After Sunbury won the toss Paul Stirling provided an explosive start to the innings with a scorching 68 from 28 balls. Adam London and Oliver Roland-Jones followed this up with scores of 78 and 64 respectiively and Gavin Spencer with 50. These and other contributions provided a total of 321 from the alotted 50 overs.

Reigate Priory stuggled in reply with some tight bowling by Stirling, Stanier and Granger and Reigate were dismissed for 207 in the 47th over.

Angus Fraser Undertakes the 2nd Round Draw

The 2nd round draw for the 32 teams remaining in the competition was undertaken by Angus Fraser, Managing Director of Middlesex Cricket during Middlesex's fixture against Gloucestershire at the Nevil Road Ground in Bristol on 5th May.

Coincidentally, Toby Roland-Jones was taking 2 of his 5 first innings wickets while the draw was in progress. This proved a good omen as Sunbury averted the away fixture to Ventnor with the privilege for that journey falling to Malden Wanderers.

The 60s All Stars: Virtuoso Performance

Stayin' Alive Rock Events came up trumps on Thursday evening with an act to die for. Alan Lovell (Swinging Blue Jeans), Mick Avory (The Kinks), John Dee (The Foundations) and Del Mandel (Crispian St. Peters/George Harrison) emptied the tables and filled the aisles. The many, now near pensionable, 'Children of the 60s' filling Sunbury Cricket Club were sent home happy but exhausted. Recalling their moves to the classic 60s rock - possibly for the first time in more than a generation - these are children with aching muscles the morning after.

Moving seamlessly between sentimental anthems such as Hey Jude and the frenzied rhythms of Johnny Be Good, our 60s heroes pumped it out on a backlit stage in an intimate setting worthy of their roots. A privilege for us all.
