Bill Kincaid's Retirement

Club's Tribute to Bill

Bill Kincaid served the Club as fixture secretary and Chairman over a period of some 30 years and formally relinquished his responsibilities at the AGM on 19th November. Club Chairman, Michael Lowe paid tribute to and thanked Bill for his immemse service to the Club and, in a short ceremony, presented a gift of an engraved silver salver from Members to commemorate his contribution.

Bill's letter of thanks and valediction is attached. As one might expect of Bill, it makes interesting reading and draws a fascinating picture as to how the work of fixture secretary and many facets of Club cricket have changed over 30 years.

Elliot Shaw Scores 1,000 runs in 2009

Elliot Shaw has had a brilliant season in 2009. His achievenets have been lost from the percptionof most of us as they are split between Colts and Senior matches.

In total however he has scored 1,145 runs, 421 in the senior XIs - most of which were in the Surrey Championship - and 724 in the Colts, making him the 4th highest run scorer of the season. He is 1 of only 4 players to exceed 1,000 runs in 2009, finishing just 3 runs behind John Salter and 12 runs behind James Kuiper.

Well done Elliot!

Ireland Win U19s Qualifying Tournament

Ireland to New Zealand in January

Stuey Poynter returns from Toronto with the joyous Ireland U19 squad which won the ICC Global U19 World Cup Qualifiers in Toronto.

The tournament determined which nations progress to the U19 World Cup Finals in New Zealand in January 2010. In addition to Ireland these were Afganistan, Papua New Guinea, USA and Hong Kong with the surprise omission of The Netherlands who finished runners up amongst the 9 teams who played in the tournament. Our thoughts have to go to the 10th nation, Sierra Leone, who through muddle or worse failed to get the visas for the lads to get to Canada for the tournament. A stewards' inquiry is underway there, and rightly so.

Stuey was prevented by illness from competing in the last two matches against Uganda and Vanuatu (and was rested for the 'easy' match v USA) but still finished 2nd in the stumpers league. Well done Stuey and good luck for New Zealand in January!

U15s Middlesex Finals Result

Sunday 30th August

Sunbury viewed a decidedly dangerous looking wicket and wondered what the day would have in store. Eastcote had seen off League favourites Ealing in the last round and their accurate attack meant that we had to realistically look to set any total above 100. James Churchman was to bat through which he did superbly with an unbeaten 28, and the rest of the side were to attack the bowling. Elliot Shaw made a very good 21 before the uneven bounce accounted for him. Sam Wilkins was unfortunate to be given out off a ball that clearly bounced in front of the fielder, however Joe Spencer stepped up and launched the spinners in a very rapid 27 to enable us to pass a 100 with a couple of spare overs and Amit Karawadhra scored of every ball to ensure we set a very competitive 114 for 4. Haroon Aslam 4 overs for 12 and Chris Ash 4 overs 1 for 16 got us off to the perfect start but with Eastcote batting all the way down it was Adam Hackett who ripped out the middle order with 3 for 18 who turned the game Sunbury's way. Elliot Shaw bowled with great accuracy to take two for 16 and Eastcote could not manage the 12 runs required of Chris Ash's last over as Sunbury progressed to the final. However it should be stressed that both sides were unhappy with the wicket which probably meant that this was not the fairest way to decide the county finalist.

Bessborough had overcome some giants from Wembley much to the relief of our young side which only had 5 under 15's with the bulk of the side being under 14's. On Sunbury winning the toss and batting Alex Hughes took the game to Bessbourogh but the uneven bounce saw him hit on the gloves, then the helmet and finally a top edge, certainly not ideal conditions for a final. Sam as usual was playing some superb shots and with Elliot also attacking we were playing excellent cricket. As usual the uneven bounce struck again and we lost these two and Nick Stevens who was stroking the ball around in his usual classy manor. Joe Spencer tried one attacking shot too many, but no problem Mike Smith strode to the wicket and scored a magnificent 23 in the last couple of overs including a super 6 and several scorching 4's. A total of 120 for 5 seemed very competitive on this demanding wicket. However it was one of those days the shooters missed the stumps and those that reared caught the edges but not to hand. When our chances did come the deciding factor was we dropped them. One of their opening batsmen survived all manor of chances to guide Bessborough through with a few balls left. All the Sunbury boys bowled well Elliot Shaw 3 for 24, Haroon Aslam 1 for 24 and Chris Ash (our bowler of the day) 1 for 18 and their was nothing between the sides apart from that bit of luck on the day.

It was the end of a very successful season for the squad which had already won the Surrey Cup and had now finished runners up in the Middlesex League. Elliot Shaw has been a superb leader as Captain but also dominated with the bat and the ball. Andrew Westphal (missing for the final) has real potential as a bowler (he's quick and aggressive). He also made many telling contributions with the bat. Joe Spencer is one of the quickest bowlers in our age group a magnificent striker of the ball and a fantastic competitor a man to have on your side. Nick Stevens is simply the best keeper in his age group and would easily keep for any of the Sunbury XI's and hopefully will next year, add that to his stylish batting we have a star of the future. Sam Wilkins has progressed more than all and as the season got to the competitive rounds his attacking batting won us many vital games, so add this to his excellent fielding no wonder he is invaluable to the side. My thanks to all five who were the backbone of the side and were such good ambassadors of Sunbury CC. Of course there was many others including an array of very talented under 14's who will surely be just as successful next year, so my thanks to all who played and made it such an enjoyable season.

England v Australia Over 60s Result

A powerful England side eased to victory over Australia in the inaugural international Over 60s match on Sunbury CC's Geoff Kaye Memorial Ground on Tuesday thereby adding the Sunbury 0ver 60 Cricket Shield donated by Cricket Australia to the Ashes won at the Oval by England's younger cricketers.

The touring side lunched with the Mayor of Spelthorne, Councillor Caroline Spencer, prior to the match at which she welcomed the tourists and thanked the Mayor of Hume City, Councillor Jack Ogilvie, for his illustrated letter of greeting. She spoke of their shared support for the contest, the linking of the two Sunburys by cricket - and of their support for their respective countries in the contest!

The Mayor started proceedings by tossing the coin on behalf of the England captain. The Mayor spun the coin with due expertise the right side up and England elected to bat. On a good batting wicket England amassed 274 runs in their allotted 45 overs setting their opponents a target of 6 runs an over. Australia started well but soon lost wickets and struggled to recover their early poise and could reach only 152 - 6 after their 45 overs, 122 runs short of the England total.

Sunbury XI beat Australia Over 60s

An inspired elderly Sunbury XI beat Australia Over 60s on their return to Kenton Court Meadow on Thursday for their second match on the ground this week and their last fixture on their current tour. Sunbury scored 208 for 6 in their 45 overs aided by a sparkling 57 not out by Gus Utting. Two catches by Club Chairman, Michael Low, one a stunning reaction catch at short mid-wicket to depose Australias' captain Ian Longmuir who was their top scorer on 56, retricted Australia's reply to 171-9.

England v Australia Over 60s

Tuesday 25th August 1:30pm

The Club is delighted to be hosting an Over 60s fixture between an Australia XI and an England XI. The teams are represented by club, rather than international, players and so this is no exhibition match but one which will be taken seriously by both sides and the competition will be to a high standard.

Moreover, we are blessed with another visit by the Mayor, Councillor Caroline Spencer, who will toss the coin on behalf of the England captain.

The tourists are playing 12 matches on their current tour of England, including 2 at Sunbury: that on 25th August (the day following the Oval Test) against the England O60s XI; and, on 27th August, their '2nd XI' is pitted against against a Sunbury O60s XI. The match on the 25th is the highlight of the Tour and that on 27th is the last of their 12 matches to be played before returning home.

Cricket Australia have donated a shield, called the Sunbury Over 60 Cricket Shield, for which the sides will compete on a regular basis in future years.

Sunbury, Victoria, is the source of the ashes in the Urn. The ashes are believed to be those from the bails, balls or stumps used in a match between the touring MCC side (in the years before our national overseas touring cricket teams were called England) in a social match held in the grounds of Rupertswood Mansion in Sunbury, Victoria on the 1882/83 tour to Australia. Others more recently claim that the ashes are from a lady's veil. The Urn was presented to the MCC Captain, The Hon Ivo Bligh, by a group of Melbourne ladies at the subsequent Melbourne Test match in January 1883.

It is the objective of the visit to strengthen the ties between Sunbury, Middlesex and Sunbury, Victoria through cricket. All three Victorian clubs and ourselves have chosen to mark the occasion of the visit with an exchange of caps.

Members are invited to attend and are advised to bring their own chairs.

Come on You Colts!

U11s and U15s through to Middlesex Finals Day
With both semi-finals and the final played on the same day at Mill Hill CC, and the U11s occupying one square and the U15s the other, it should make for a day of non stop action.

Destroyer Rooney Takes 3 Wickets in One Over
A highly respected Potters Bar side arrived at Kenton Court Meadow for the U15 quarter finals match against Sunbury on Thursday evening full of confidence. Despite losing the toss they set about attacking Sunbury from the start. A wicket maiden including the dismissal of the prolific scoring Elliot Shaw meant Sunbury were going to battle for their score. Alex Hughes batting maturely held the early innings together with a well made 20 and Sam Wilkins smashed a quick 10 to get some momentum going Sunbury's way. 110 looked a par score on a wicket which was more than helpful to the bowlers. Andrew Westphal and Nick Stevens batted superbly together, first assessing the wicket and then attacking the bowling. Andrew scored an unbeaten 57 and Nick and unbeaten 32 as they took the score to a more than respectable 131 for 3.

Elliot had learnt from Potters Bar probably over attacking fields and Joe Spencer was a very lively opening bowler letting the Potters Bar openers know they were in for a struggle. However the match was settled in one dramatic over when Haroon Aslam (Rooney!) spun one past the bat to allow Nick to take an excellent stumping; second ball saw Nick taking a sharp catch to see their number three skulking back to the pavilion. Unfortunately for The Bar the number four, lasted only 3 balls and was bowled by Rooney as he played back to a beauty. The game virtually ended there. Rooney finished with 3 for 6 and Joe Spencer 1 for 6 and between them they had taken the key wickets. Adam Hacket was too fast and too straight for the middle order with 3 for 8 and Rauri Critchard showed he could catch (but only off his own bowling!) to take our final wicket. Sunbury finished comfortable winners of a match that could have been very competitive.

The under 15s have really improved as the season has progressed. They have loads of bowling options and plenty of batting. Perhaps a little improvement in their fielding will see them go all the way.

On Tour with Surrey U12s and U14s
Tom Tebble and Robbie Hughes found it tough going on tour with Surrey U12's in Taunton. In a rained affected week with boys going down like flies with swine flu the team failed to win a match. However the experience was good and both will have learnt much from the week.

Surrey U14's performed much better and became National County U14 Champions beating Hampshire in the final at Oakham School. Alex Hughes got through a great bowling spell taking 3 wickets for 16 in 5 overs. This Surrey team were last years U13 National Champions and it is the first time a County team has effectively retained their National Cup. Well done Alex and here's to 3 in a row at U15 next year!

Under 11s in Superb Form

Sunbury U11s met Harrow St. Mary in the 35 over U11 Midlesex Cup Final at Teddington CC on 8th August.

The Harrow club won the toss and decided to bat. Their side contained 7 MCA county colts and after 18 overs they were comfortable at 63-3 until Rajan Soni took 4 wickets for 6 runs in his 6 overs as Harrow St. Mary subsided to 119 all out.

Sunbury's reply meant an over rate of approximately 3 runs per over would see them home. Haryeer Mahajan and Bradley Erasmus opened the innings and looked very comfortable as they put on 76 at the 18 over break after which the partnership blossomed until Haryeer was dismissed with the total on 99 with only 21 needed. Rajan joined Bradley and Sunbury were home with 9 wickets in hand and 9 overs to spare, Bradley was 79 not out. A truly remarkable victory.

Bradley Erasmus also went on to cap off a fine season for Middlesex U13s by making 87 against a strong Ireland U13 side at Radley College on 11th August. His season so far has included 9 centuries in all forms of cricket topping the country wide ECB U13 batting in the County Cup. He also finished as the top run scorer in the Middlesex U13s. This, despite being still only 11.

This season's performance continues his remarkable progress with club and county from the time when he joined Sunbury at the age of 7, four years ago.

Sunbury Super Colts Surrey Success Story

Sunbury Colts are engrossed in county finals with 4 of the 5 age groups having won their Surrey League semi finals. Only the U13s didn't quite make it to the finals, falling short of their target by just 6 runs. Congratulations to them nevertheless on a great effort in reaching the semis: that is a considerabe achievement in itself.

Surrey League Finals
On Monday night, both U12s and U15s won their Surrey League finals at Horsely & Send. The U12s batted first in their match setting their opposition, Guildford, a target of 120 with the loss of just 4 wickets and then bowled out Guildfod for 97. The U15s also set a target of 120 for 4 and Horsely & Send also only managed 97 (for 9 wickets).

U12 and U15 Winning Finalists in Surrey League

Under 12s and 15s celebrating their twin success (who gave him that hat?)

This was followed on Tuesday night with victory by the U14s away against Staines and Laleham. We batted first on a difficult wicket and totalled 112-8 with Captain Alex Hughes topscoring with 29. Staines & Laleham fell behind the run rate but batted soundly - however, with the spinners on, wickets tumbled Hughes taking 4 for 7 in 4 overs and Staines finished on 85 for 7

So three wonderful victories and one Surrey final still to go - the U11s v Valley End which is still to be arranged.

Middlesex League Finals
The U12s also won their Middlesex League Final on Wednesday 22nd July romping home with a 9 wicket victory over Hampton Wick Royal with a great all round performance from the team. Hampton Wick Royal 61-8 (20) Sunbury 62-1

U12s victorious after their Middlesex League Final

U12s after their victorious Middlesex League Final against Hampton Wick Royal

From round the Counties
Surrey U14s, including our own spin king Alex Hughes, have won through to the National ECB Cup semi final to be played at Oakham, having beaten Essex on Sunday 26th Juy in the quarter finals. Another of our own, John White, was officiating.

Robbie Hughes and Tom Tebble will play in County Festival for Surrey U12s at Taunton against St Stithian's from South Africa, Devon, Lancashire, Hampshire and Essex.

Well done you Colts!

Mayor of Spelthorne Opens Nets

The Mayor of Spelthorne, Councillor Caroline Spencer, was at Sunbury Cricket Club on Saturday 1st August. The Mayor watched the match between Sunbury 1st XI and Reigate Priory over drinks on the terrace before taking lunch with representatives of the sponsors of the new £47,000 net complex and the principal officers of the Club. Amongst the guests were Councillor Harry Jaffer, Chairman of Spelthorne Sports Council, and Arun Harinath the rising Surrey star.

Then it was the big moment as the Mayor opened the superb facility following which she was treated to a display by a selection of Sunbury Colts organised by the U10s Coach Barry Croft.

Naturally we should like to send Roger off in some style and he will be at the Club from 1:00pm on 1st August. The timing will also allow him and as many other Members as possible to be at the Mayoral opening of the nets. It's an open invitation. If you knew Roger come along for a drink.

Message from Australia

(from an e-mail by Matthew Kelly to the President)

"It has been a little while since I checked in with the Club. I still send the odd text to some of the boys and I check every Monday as to how the team has performed. I note that there are enough games left and certainly sufficient talent for the Club to capture a prize that has been missing from the cabinet for more than a decade.

It was great to see Adam London get onto the field in England colours; but, as an Australian I was equally pleased that he didn't throw down the sticks and run out an Australian batsman during one of the English players many comfort breaks. Well done to England, they certainly turned fortunes around from the first test and it will be an enthralling end to the series.

I was supposed to be over in England about now; but the reason that I was coming fell through. I really look forward to coming back to the Club at some point and wasting a Saturday afternoon at Kenton Court Meadow.

In the meantime, I look forward to a great outcome to the season."

Sham Nayyar

Older members will remember Sham Nayyar who died in March as a good friend and cricketer. 1st XI players of recent years will recall him watching their progress from the boundary. Not all members knew that Sham had a budding first class career in India before coming to England in 1952. An expanded entry, intended as a small tribute by his friends, is now on Cricinfo. It was also poignant to see photographs of a young Sham, and of Sai Saigal, in Camberley's clubhouse during a recent Sunday fixture there.
