12 May 2008 Poker Tourney
(click for top of page)A final reminder for the inaugural Sunbury Cricket Club Poker Night. The night is being run by those responsible for the running of the Second XI, principally Matt Golding and Darren 'the Hustler' London. Incidentally London is known as the Hustler not for his underhand style of play but more for his love of 'top-shelf' magazines.
The night kicks off at 7.30pm, although players are urged to arrive before the scheduled start and to pay their entry money (£15 - £10 to the pot and £5 to the club) by Thursday to receive bonus chips.
The prize pool should exceed £300 but moreover it should be a great club night and it would be brilliant to bring in some good numbers as those involved have already put in a lot of work.
The tournament is open to total beginners and experienced pros, although here is a quick heads-up on who to look out for:
Nick Jupp - a poker regular, he has already taken down the pot on several occasions in the regular Thursday night tournament at the club.
Kevin Smith - 'Smudger', yes his nickname is terrible but he knows his straights from his flushes and has been known to use his girlfriend to distract other players at the table - and everyone else in the room.
Jonny Irons - 'The Jellyman', his sheer physical presence often forces opponents to lay down hands they would normally play, his weakness - female players.
Max Hall - MPH2008, an online pro, when he isn't 'not fixing the hot water at the club' he is biding his time on Party Poker - a dark horse.
Rolyrat- Just be careful, he is a serious player.
Mickey Lowe - 'The Bossman', this customs officer is one man you don't want to cross on the table - would you go all-in against the Chairman?
Bill Kincaid - 'Brigadier', although negotiations are ongoing about his appearance fee, Bill is an experienced pro. He likes to talk his opponents through a Sunday Squires outing forcing those on his table into a deep sleep.
David Nash - 'The Dog', just be very careful of this man, he knows his way around a poker table, can sometimes see the reflections of cards on his shiny head.
Adam Stanier - 'Junior', if his girlfriend lets him play, he could be a danger. Takes his time, his poker is nearly as slow as his bowling.
Adam London - 'Pup' is the bookies favourite, his brother is running the competition after all. Be very afraid, he got a 24 year old's number last weekend.
12 May 2008 Fantasy Gossip
(click for top of page)Sunbury Cricket Club's Fantasy Cricket League officially kicked off this weekend as over 40 manager's battle it out to be crowned the ultimate Fantasy Champion.
Perennial silver medallist Mickey Lowe has once again hedged his bets by selecting three sides, while John London seems to have picked his three sides out of a hat. Ian Pope and 'Fantasy stalwart' Micky O' have also selected three sides as they bid to become the leading manager in the 2008 season.
Napier's Numpties unsurprisingly include Scott Napier himself and if a captain could be selected then surely Mr Utting himself would be the skipper of Gus's Goons. Other names of note include Bling Bling - a ghetto term used by young people to describe jewellery often worn by celebrity rap singers - managed by Shane White - word out to him bruv. The less said about Debbie does Dollars the better, while the bookies are tipping Gavin Spencer's Whipping through the Covers for big things.
Player selection is often the subject of much debate for managers and for all the umming and erring it would seem that the middle order has proved the least difficult selection. Neil Khanna and Charlie Holcomb have been picked by the majority of managers; in a pre-season Press Conference, 2nd Team Skipper Matt Golding suggested that Khanna may take the gloves on several occasions, adding to his points potential, while Holcomb, not to be confused with his brother Chris (a snip at 0.5 points), has been a consistent performer for years and is good value at 4 points.
For those who aren't aware John Marc Jones has joined us in 2008 and can be found in the seam bowling category and has already turned out for various sides including the internationally recognised Squires side. Gareth Mckeown is a hard-hitting Irish import and if you are looking for Adam Stanier in the slow bowling section he is actually now classed as an All-Rounder, which has surprised some and outraged others.
Don't be surprised to see Dan Midwinter make contributions with Bat and Ball, particularly as his sleeping habits evolve for the summer, similarly don't be fooled into thinking Andy Poynter will be around every weekend as he is away in Ireland for the majority of weekends. Only a fool could ignore the potential of the 'Nobby Not Out and Noop Doggy Dog' all rounder's combination, although many managers have stretched their finances to include New Zealand star Luke Woodcock in their final XI. Matthew Todd, Steve Lewis and John Maunders are also valued at 7 points; however they are all quality players and will be consistent point scorers throughout the season.
Manager of the Month awards are awarded each month, beginning in May and managers are aware that a transfer system is in full operation and need to be submitted to league supremo Mr Michael Lowe, an official All Star from Number 23.
