26 July 2008  London living on cloud 9

The club comes alive as London’s living on Cloud 9where others can only go to drown their sorrows! Special congratulations this week for Sunbury’s newest star and Middlesex CCC squad member Adam London, featured punching the air with a cry of “come on” in front of Sky Sports cameras Saturday eve after Middlesex beat Kent in the 20 20 final. Magners, Fosters, players and supporters stayed poised at Kenton Court to watch and cheer on the fanatic close encounter which somewhat overshadowed the days play at Kenton Court, where neither team could gain a point. Nephew of the Pope clan Ben Scott (Middlesex keeper) featured in the game with some serious glove work to help Middlesex to victory.
To have more than a handful of Club members in the bar on a Saturday night after 8pm was a rarity but goes to show the Sunbury Spirit is still alive, we should all do our bit for the club and try to get similar atmospheres over the closing weeks of the summer!

(click for top of page)

Congratulations to Adam London who has been offered a Summer Contract for the 2008 season by Middlesex County Cricket Club. Adam has been a Sunbury colt since he was knee high to a grasshopper and although he hasn't grown a whole lot, he has progressed to become an outstanding young cricketer who fully deserves his chance. Adam has progressed through the Middlesex Youth System before impressing for the Second XI with his graceful left handed batting and his wonderful ability in the field, not to mention his developing off-spin bowling. Sunbury wish Adam the best of luck in his time with Middlesex and hope he can keep turning out for the 1st Team on a Saturday.

19 May 2008  The Chips are Down - Sunbury Cricket Club Poker Tournament

(click for top of page)

The inaugural SCCPT held on Friday night was a total success as the tournament registered nearly thirty players and more importantly was a successful fund-raiser for the club. Brought to you by ALL-IN entertainment, the SCCPT was the first of its kind held at Kenton Court Meadow and organiser Darren London enthused that "it will be the first of many, we've all had a great night, it was nice to get the numbers that we did, but there is no reason why we can't get more people involved in the future". Matt Golding, CEO of ALL-IN entertainment, who did not have the best tournament in terms of his own performance, said "I'm delighted that we've attracted some of the biggest names in poker here tonight, you only normally see guys like Rolyrat on the T.V, so it's great to have him here in person, you can always learn from guys like him".

The tournament itself was eventful right from the first hand. Chips were thrown around willy-nilly and the play was fast and more often than not, loose. Adam London was the first casualty of the evening as his King's were trumped by Scott Anstiss' three of a kind Jack's. Stuart Poynter, Matt Golding, Max Hall and his beau Hayley were the other major casualties of the first hour as Olly Phipps and Mickey Lowe built particularly impressive chip stacks. At the first break less than twenty players remained as the card sharks dined on various gourmet pies.

As the tournament got into its third hour the final table began to take shape as Paul 'Monkey (?!)' Gabb and 'The Waffle' began to make their mark on the tournament taking down several big pots. With the elimination of Nick Hampshire and Rolyrat the final table line-up was confirmed.; Darren London, Paul Gabb, Mickey Lowe, Zach Johnston, Paul Sinnaere, Chris Holcomb , Olly Phipps and amazingly Neil Khanna. Bollywood Khanna's tale is one of rags to riches. At best a part-time player, he may have been a contestant for best dressed, but not many of the pundits had tipped him for honours in this tournament. Mickey 'Don Ravioli' Lowe was pushing his weight around, quite content to move all-in, he was the final table bully, while young Phipps and 'boring' Johnston froze a little in the quest for cash. However the Don was eliminated after some ballsy play by Paul 'the Waffle' Sinnaere and Chris 'Shaggy' Holcomb quietly went about tripling his seemingly modest stack. No-one was quite sure what 'Shaggy' was a reference to, although the guess is that it was not a reference to his prowess with the opposite or same sex. With the blinds high and the players brave, chips were changing hands with regularity and all of sudden only three players remained. Olly 'Jeffery Boggard' Phipps, Bollywood Khanna and The Waffle were all assured of prize money. And the players did finish in that order, as The Waffle, not shy of a Belgian dessert, romped to victory, defeating Bollywood in the first hand of heads-up play to confirm that 'The Waffle never dies'.

An enthralling tournament, well supported by the club and enjoyed by all who took part. A good advert for ALL-IN entertainment and a credit to the Second XI who were responsible for the creation and the running of the event.

18 May 2008  Indoor triumph at the Surrey Cricket Centre for the Under 11s

(click for top of page)

Congratulations to all of the Under 11s who competed in the Guildford 6 a side Indoor Tournament which took place at the Surrey Cricket Centre during the winter. It was a tremendous squad effort to get to the final game against Effingham in pole position.

The team played fantastically well to beat Effingham comfortably to claim top spot and become Tournament winners. Sunbury batted first and got a total of 112 without losing a wicket. Robbie recorded a quick-fire 25 before retiring and the runs continued with some great batting from all the boys against some good bowling with only a couple of wides from the opposition. Sunbury's fielding and bowling was again excellent all round with Tom picking up figures of 3 wickets for 3 runs in just under 3 overs as Sunbury romped home to victory. Photographed are the final winning Sunbury team of Kieran, Robbie, Ali, James, Tom and Max.

A great start for the U11's which is set to continue. Following the well attended pre-season nets the age group has recorded some convincing victories at the start of this season proper, keep it going lads..

12 May 2008  Fantasy Gossip

(click for top of page)

Sunbury Cricket Club's Fantasy Cricket League officially kicked off this weekend as over 40 manager's battle it out to be crowned the ultimate Fantasy Champion.

Perennial silver medallist Mickey Lowe has once again hedged his bets by selecting three sides, while John London seems to have picked his three sides out of a hat. Ian Pope and 'Fantasy stalwart' Micky O' have also selected three sides as they bid to become the leading manager in the 2008 season.

Napier's Numpties unsurprisingly include Scott Napier himself and if a captain could be selected then surely Mr Utting himself would be the skipper of Gus's Goons. Other names of note include Bling Bling - a ghetto term used by young people to describe jewellery often worn by celebrity rap singers - managed by Shane White - word out to him bruv. The less said about Debbie does Dollars the better, while the bookies are tipping Gavin Spencer's Whipping through the Covers for big things.

Player selection is often the subject of much debate for managers and for all the umming and erring it would seem that the middle order has proved the least difficult selection. Neil Khanna and Charlie Holcomb have been picked by the majority of managers; in a pre-season Press Conference, 2nd Team Skipper Matt Golding suggested that Khanna may take the gloves on several occasions, adding to his points potential, while Holcomb, not to be confused with his brother Chris (a snip at 0.5 points), has been a consistent performer for years and is good value at 4 points.

For those who aren't aware John Marc Jones has joined us in 2008 and can be found in the seam bowling category and has already turned out for various sides including the internationally recognised Squires side. Gareth Mckeown is a hard-hitting Irish import and if you are looking for Adam Stanier in the slow bowling section he is actually now classed as an All-Rounder, which has surprised some and outraged others.

Don't be surprised to see Dan Midwinter make contributions with Bat and Ball, particularly as his sleeping habits evolve for the summer, similarly don't be fooled into thinking Andy Poynter will be around every weekend as he is away in Ireland for the majority of weekends. Only a fool could ignore the potential of the 'Nobby Not Out and Noop Doggy Dog' all rounder's combination, although many managers have stretched their finances to include New Zealand star Luke Woodcock in their final XI. Matthew Todd, Steve Lewis and John Maunders are also valued at 7 points; however they are all quality players and will be consistent point scorers throughout the season.

Manager of the Month awards are awarded each month, beginning in May and managers are aware that a transfer system is in full operation and need to be submitted to league supremo Mr Michael Lowe, an official All Star from Number 23.
