4th XI v Streatham & Marlborough

The 4’s continued their excellent start to the season with a comprehensive win over one of the main challengers for the league this year in Streatham & Marlborough. Having lost the toss and being asked to bat first, we were on the back foot a touch with Mugsy going early. Early fears grew this could be a tough day in store on a pitch that had been under the covers for much of the past 3 days. But the 4’s are meade of stronger stuff these days, and with the AGELESS Anoop Manro continuing his fine early season form, ably assisted my Mark Ventham (15) Jack Greaves (29) and Jacob Amyatt-Leir (29) the scoreboard continued to look healthy for much of the innings. Sagar Patel took one bowler to the cleaners, taking 20 off the over to propel us towards 171, a decent total, albeit we knew on a delightful wickets of Sunbury, it would be tough to defend.
Such fears were proved to be short lived however, with the opposition 0/1 off 0.1, Sunbury marched to victory, bowling the opposition out for just 85. Only a 2nd wicket partnership of 38 offered any real resistance, as Sunbury’s excellent attacked carved through the confident opposition, evergreen Nobby Clarke claiming 4 wickets, Jacob (a real find this year) taking 3 to add to his 29 runs to complete a real all round performance, Ventham 2 and spinner Yash Patel picking up the remaining 1 wicket.
A special mention to Lucas Brierley, keeping wicket who took an outstanding catch one handed down the leg side, and the absent Captain for the day Napier gritting his teeth in the bar as stories of his excellent glove work vibrated around the room….
An excellent start from a rejuvenated 4th XI this season, with the tough proposition of a trip to Spencer looming, we’ll need a big effort from everyone to continue sitting at the right end of the table.
